Jan Allen is an award–winning curator, writer and visual artist, and an assistant professor in the Department of Art and in the Cultural Studies Program at Queen’s University, Kingston. She is Chief Curator/Curator of Contemporary Art at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, where she has overseen numerous exhibitions since 1992. Her research interests centre on new media, and socially and politically engaged art. Recent projects include Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge: Working Culture (2008), Sorting Daemons: Art, Surveillance Regimes and Social Control (2010) and Annie Pootoogook: Kinngait Compositions (2011). Jan’s independent critical writing has been published in C magazine, Artext, Prefix Photo, and Poliester. Her visual art practice is documented in Jan Allen’s Speculative Science, Carleton University Art Gallery (1999). She published a related collection of poetry under the title Personal Peripherals (BuschekBooks, 2006).
