24. The Garden and the River: Meditations on Landscape

Two exceptional writers describe the influence of the natural world on their lives. Helen Humphreys, multiple-award-winning author, presents The River, a groundbreaking examination of place: a small waterside property on the Napanee River. In the watchful way of writers, she has studied the river through seasons and years, cataloguing the plants and creatures that live in and round it, the signs of human usage at its banks. Alexandra Risen’s Unearthed: Love, Acceptance, and Other Lessons from an Abandoned Garden marks a memorable debut. While taming her neglected garden, she confronts equally tangled family relationships until the real story emerges. Merilyn Simonds (A New Leaf: Growing with My Garden) moderates.
