Born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1944, Gabor Maté emigrated to Canada with his family in 1957. He ran a private family practice in East Vancouver for over twenty years and was the Medical Coordinator of the Palliative Care Unit at Vancouver Hospital for seven years. Dr. Maté has had regular medical columns in The Vancouver Sun and the Globe and Mail.
In recognition of his work on addiction, trauma, mind-body unity, and the necessity of social change, Maté was awarded the Order of Canada in 2018.
