Over his four decades of clinical experience, Maté has come to recognize the prevailing understanding of “normal” as false. In The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness & Healing in a Toxic Culture, Dr. Gabor Maté dissects how western countries that pride themselves on their healthcare systems are actually seeing an upsurge in chronic illness and general ill health.

Born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1944, Gabor Maté emigrated to Canada with his family in 1957. He ran a private family practice in East Vancouver for over twenty years and was the Medical Coordinator of the Palliative Care Unit at Vancouver Hospital for seven years. Dr. Maté has had regular medical columns in The Vancouver Sun and the Globe and Mail.

In recognition of his work on addiction, trauma, mind-body unity, and the necessity of social change, Maté was awarded the Order of Canada in 2018.

Johann Hari, the New York Times bestselling author of Stolen Focus, describes Gabor’s upcoming book as “a wise, profound and healing work that is the culmination of Dr. Maté’s many years of deep and painfully accumulated wisdom. The Myth of Normal hits shelves on September 13th, 2022.
