Canadian songwriter, musician and music publisher, Jane McGarrigle co-wrote and sometimes performed several songs with her younger sisters, Kate and Anna McGarrigle. She served as music manager for them, as well as for other entertainers, from the early 1970s to the 1990s. She was also co-producer of their 1982 album, Love Over and Over.
Jane and her siblings were born in Montreal and raised in the Laurentian Mountain village of Saint-Sauveur-des-Monts. As Kate and Anna became known as a folk singing and song writing duo, she would wryly refer to herself as “the other sister.” Her reminiscences of their extended family are interwoven with Anna’s in alternating chapters of Mountain City Girls.
Jane is credited as a composer of the scores for Canadian film Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller and its sequel, The Return of Tommy Tricker. International artists ranging from Nana Mouskouri to Emmylou Harris recorded songs she has written. She continues to serve on the board of the Songwriters Association of Canada and be active in the international copyright advocacy movement.
