As a zoologist and author-illustrator, Jess Keating has been sprayed by skunks, bitten by crocodiles, and victim to the dreaded paper cut. Her books, which blend science, humour, and creativity, include the acclaimed My Life is a Zoo middle-grade fiction trilogy, the award-winning World of Weird Animals non-fiction series, and the picture book biography, Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean’s Most Fearless Scientist. Jess is the producer and host of two YouTube channels for young people, including Animals for Smart People, and Jess Keating Books, which incorporates her love of writing and creativity in accessible videos for young writers. She also releases a monthly e-zine (available by free subscription) called The Curious Creative, which blends both passions into a series of articles, crafts, and writing-based discussions for young creatives.

Jess’s love of animals led her to work at a wildlife rehabilitation centre, caring for injured and orphaned wild animals. Her love of reading and writing goes back to age eight, when she wrote her first “book” and started a lending library in her bedroom (mostly so she could charge her brother late fees!) She enjoys meeting kids at school visits and library events.
