In 2019, Nita Prose returned to her hotel room and startled the hotel’s maid. “I remember her stepping back into a shadowy corner,” Prose says, “and the embarrassing part is she had in her hand my track pants, which like a fool I had left in a tangled mess on my bed.”

In that moment, Prose realized how being a maid was an invisible yet intimate job. On the plane home, her main character struck her like lighting. She grabbed the napkin beneath her drink and scribbled the prologue to The Maid in a single burst.

Prose’s debut novel, The Maid, is a gripping mystery about an awkward yet perfectionistic hotel maid, Molly, who becomes the lead suspect in a murder case after finding a dead man in his hotel room. In this locked-room mystery, Prose explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different, revealing all the mysteries that can be solved through connection to the human heart.

Nita Prose is a longtime editor, serving many bestselling authors and their books. She is currently the vice president and editorial director at Simon & Schuster in Toronto, where she works with an array of authors and publishers whom she credits with teaching her the wondrous craft of writing.
