Richard has had a lifelong interest in all things military and aeronautical. He studied international relations and affairs at University of Toronto, and is the former owner and editor of a small publishing house, Fortress Publications, that specialized in military history and technology. He was resource administrator and associate editor for the Department of National Defence, and currently works in collections development and research at Fort Frontenac Library in Kingston. He has written numerous journal articles, and recently published a book on the Mustang airplane, and in his spare time volunteers on the planning committees for several Ontario air shows, and putters on his small sailboat.
